Diabetology
Diabetology is a specialized branch of endocrinology focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diabetes mellitus. It also deals with the causes and progression of this condition.
Diabetes develops when the body produces an insufficient amount of insulin—a hormone responsible for metabolism and for regulating blood glucose levels.
When the body lacks enough insulin, it disrupts water, protein, salt, and mineral metabolism, leading to elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels. Another contributing factor may be reduced sensitivity of the body's tissues to insulin.
Hormones play a vital role in growth and development, as well as in the metabolic processes that regulate the body's essential functions. They also influence digestion, sleep, the function of various organs and tissues, and a person’s emotional and psychological well-being.
