How is a cervical biopsy done?

A cervical biopsy is a medical procedure in which a doctor takes a small sample of cervical tissue for laboratory analysis. The procedure is safe, but requires certain steps to be followed to maximise the accuracy of the results and minimise discomfort for the patient.

Cervical biopsy 4

The steps in performing a biopsy are:

1. Preliminary preparation:

  • Doctor's consultation: Before the biopsy, the doctor evaluates the results of previous investigations (PAP test, colposcopy, HPV test) and explains the procedure to the patient.
  • Choice of day: The procedure is usually performed on day 7-12 of the menstrual cycle (after the end of menstruation).
  • Preparation of the patient: It is recommended to refrain from sexual intercourse, use of tampons and vaginal preparations 1-2 days before the procedure.

2. Process of the procedure:

Preparation for the procedure:

  • The patient is positioned in a gynaecological chair.
  • The doctor treats the cervix with antiseptic to avoid infections.

Anaesthesia:

  • The biopsy can be performed without anaesthesia (if the volume of tissue taken is minimal) or with local anaesthesia to reduce discomfort.

Sample collection:

  • The doctor uses special instruments (forceps, scalpel or electrosurgical loop) to take a small sample of tissue from the suspicious area.
  • The type of biopsy depends on the situation (loop biopsy, puncture biopsy, cone biopsy, etc.).
  • Duration of the procedure: The procedure usually takes 15-30 minutes.

3. Post procedure:

  • Short rest: After the biopsy, the patient may need a few minutes to recover.

Possible symptoms:

  • Minor bloody discharge or mild lower abdominal pain for a few days.

Recommendations:

  • Abstinence from sexual intercourse, bathing, use of tampons for 5-7 days.
  • Maintain hygiene and avoid physical exertion.
