Abscess Drainage of the Breast at the Helуos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center

A breast abscess is a localized cavity filled with pus that forms due to an inflammatory process in the breast tissue. Breast abscesses typically occur as a result of a bacterial infection, which can enter through cracks in the nipple or other skin injuries. This condition is most commonly observed in breastfeeding women but can also occur in non-breastfeeding women or men.

Indications for Abscess Drainage:

  • Pain and swelling in the breast area, accompanied by skin redness and fever.
  • Pus discharge through the skin or nipple.
  • Failure of conservative treatment (antibiotics and compresses) when the abscess does not decrease in size or increases.
  • Risk of infection spreading to other parts of the breast or adjacent tissues.
  • Presence of large or deep abscesses that require surgical intervention.

How is the Surgery Performed?

1.Pre-surgical preparation:

  • The patient undergoes tests to confirm the presence of an abscess and determine its size and depth (usually breast ultrasound).
  • The doctor may also order a blood test and bacterial culture to determine the type of infection causing the abscess.
  • If there are signs of intoxication or severe inflammation, additional laboratory tests may be conducted.

2.Abscess drainage procedure:

  • The surgery may be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the size of the abscess and the patient's overall condition.
  • The surgeon makes an incision at the site of the most pronounced inflammation to drain the pus and empty the abscess cavity.
  • After drainage, the cavity is flushed with antiseptic solutions to remove any remaining infection.

3.Post-operative recovery:

  • After abscess drainage, the patient may remain under medical supervision for 1-2 days, depending on the procedure's complexity.
  • Re-dressings and monitoring of the healing process will be performed.
  • Antibiotics are prescribed to prevent infection.
  • A special compression bra may be recommended to support the breast and prevent excess pressure on the wound.
  • Once the abscess heals, the patient will continue with general monitoring of breast health.
