Indications for Bariatric Surgery
Bariatric surgery is considered when other weight loss methods, such as diet and exercise, have failed, or when obesity severely impacts daily activities. The primary criterion for determining the need for bariatric surgery is the individual's body mass index (BMI). BMI is calculated by dividing weight (kg) by height (m²), with normal values not exceeding 25 kg/m². Based on BMI, obesity is classified as follows:Cleveland Clinic
- Class I: BMI 30–34.9 kg/m²
- Class II: BMI 35–39.9 kg/m²
- Class III (severe obesity): BMI ≥40 kg/m²Guideline Central+2NCBI+2PMC+2Guideline Central
Bariatric surgery is typically indicated for:
- Class II obesity (BMI >35 kg/m²)
- Class I obesity (BMI >30 kg/m²) with associated conditions like type 2 diabetes
- Ineffectiveness of other weight loss methods
- Severe comorbidities related to obesity (e.g., hypertension, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis)
- Need to reduce weight prior to orthopedic surgeries (e.g., joint replacement)
- Preparation for assisted reproductive technologies (e.g., IVF)Cleveland Clinic+1Guideline Central+1Verywell Health+4PMC+4Cleveland Clinic+4Medscape+1NCBI+1
