Thyroidectomy at the Helуos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center

Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure during which the thyroid gland is completely or partially removed. This surgery is usually performed when there is suspicion of thyroid cancer or in the presence of large benign tumors (nodules) that affect the function of the gland.

Indications for Thyroidectomy

The procedure may be required in the following cases:

  • Thyroid cancer — if there is suspicion of malignancy or a confirmed diagnosis of thyroid cancer.
  • Benign tumors — large nodules, cysts, or goiter that interfere with the normal function of the thyroid gland.
  • Thyrotoxicosis — when the thyroid gland produces excess hormones, and other treatments are ineffective.
  • Multinodular goiter — when multiple formations in the thyroid interfere with its function.
  • Atypical formations in the thyroid gland that require removal to rule out cancer.

Types of Thyroidectomy

  1. Total thyroidectomy — removal of the entire thyroid gland.
  2. Partial thyroidectomy — removal of a portion of the thyroid gland (usually when only one lobe is affected).
  3. Subtotal thyroidectomy — removal of most of the thyroid gland, when several areas are affected.

How the Surgery is Performed

Diagnosis: Before surgery, the patient undergoes necessary tests such as ultrasound of the thyroid, biopsy, hormone analysis, and other studies to confirm the diagnosis.

Preparation: The patient consults with a surgeon and anesthesiologist. A medical history is collected, and general tests are performed. Additional examinations may be prescribed if necessary.

Surgery:

  • The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
  • Depending on the extent of the surgical intervention, the surgeon removes either one or the entire thyroid gland.
  • The surgery typically lasts from 1 to 2 hours, depending on its complexity.

Rehabilitation: After surgery, the patient stays in the hospital for 1-3 days under medical supervision. Recovery is usually quick, and patients can return to normal activities within a few days.

Follow-up Monitoring: After surgery, it is important to undergo regular check-ups and monitor hormone levels, as hormone therapy may be required in some cases.
