Hemithyroidectomy at the Helуos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center

Hemithyroidectomy is a surgical procedure in which one lobe of the thyroid gland (either the left or right) is removed. This method is used for various thyroid diseases, such as benign tumors (nodules, cysts), cancer, thyrotoxicosis, or when other treatments have not been effective.

When is Hemithyroidectomy Necessary?

The procedure may be required in the following cases:

  • Benign formations (nodules, cysts) that do not respond to conservative treatment
  • Thyrotoxicosis, when one part of the thyroid gland overproduces hormones
  • Thyroid cancer, when only one lobe of the organ is affected
  • Multinodular goiter, causing discomfort and impairing thyroid function
  • Atypical thyroid formations that require removal to rule out cancerous conditions

How is the Surgery Performed?

Diagnosis: Before the surgery, the patient undergoes necessary tests: ultrasound of the thyroid, biopsy (if necessary), CT, MRI. These allow for an accurate assessment of the organ's condition and determine the extent of surgery required.

Preparation: Consultation with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and other specialists (if necessary). Blood tests and other assessments are performed to evaluate the patient's general health.

Surgery:

  • The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
  • The surgeon removes one lobe of the thyroid, leaving the other part of the organ intact to ensure normal function.
  • If there is suspicion of cancer, lymph nodes may also be removed.
  • The surgery typically lasts from 1 to 2 hours, depending on the complexity.

Rehabilitation: After the surgery, the patient remains in the hospital under supervision for 1-3 days. Recovery is usually quick, and patients can return to normal activities within a few days.

Follow-up Monitoring: After the surgery, it is important to undergo regular check-ups and monitor hormone levels to prevent complications and restore thyroid function.
