Causes:
- Congenital abnormality – Some individuals are predisposed to hiatal hernia due to a structural weakness in the diaphragm.
- Increased abdominal pressure – Excessive strain from heavy lifting, chronic coughing, or obesity can force the stomach upward through the diaphragm.
- Age-related changes – Over time, the tissues around the esophageal opening may weaken, increasing the risk of hernia.
Symptoms:
- Heartburn and a sensation of “acid” in the throat, especially after eating or at night
- Chest pain that may mimic a heart attack
- Difficulty swallowing or the sensation that food is stuck in the esophagus
- Nausea, vomiting, and a feeling of fullness after meals
- Coughing or shortness of breath due to aspiration of stomach contents into the lungs
When to See a Doctor:
- Persistent heartburn that doesn’t respond to antacids or other medications
- Ongoing chest pain, especially after eating
- Painful or difficult swallowing
- Worsening of symptoms at night or after meals
