Hiatal Hernia Treatment at Helyos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center

A hiatal hernia is a condition in which a part of the stomach or another abdominal organ protrudes through the esophageal opening of the diaphragm into the chest cavity. This can disrupt the normal functioning of the stomach and esophagus, causing symptoms such as pain, heartburn, and digestive disorders.

Causes:

  • Congenital abnormality – Some individuals are predisposed to hiatal hernia due to a structural weakness in the diaphragm.
  • Increased abdominal pressure – Excessive strain from heavy lifting, chronic coughing, or obesity can force the stomach upward through the diaphragm.
  • Age-related changes – Over time, the tissues around the esophageal opening may weaken, increasing the risk of hernia.

Symptoms:

  • Heartburn and a sensation of “acid” in the throat, especially after eating or at night
  • Chest pain that may mimic a heart attack
  • Difficulty swallowing or the sensation that food is stuck in the esophagus
  • Nausea, vomiting, and a feeling of fullness after meals
  • Coughing or shortness of breath due to aspiration of stomach contents into the lungs

When to See a Doctor:

  • Persistent heartburn that doesn’t respond to antacids or other medications
  • Ongoing chest pain, especially after eating
  • Painful or difficult swallowing
  • Worsening of symptoms at night or after meals

Consultation Process:

1.Initial examination:

  • The doctor gathers your medical history and assesses symptoms like heartburn, chest pain, and swallowing difficulties. A physical exam is performed to rule out other causes of chest pain.

2.Diagnostic tests:

  • To confirm the diagnosis, the following tests may be recommended:
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) – visual inspection of the esophagus and stomach for damage or ulcers
  • Barium swallow X-ray – to detect displacement of organs through the diaphragmatic opening
  • 24-hour pH monitoring – to measure acid levels in the esophagus and assess the severity of reflux

3.Treatment Assessment:

  • Based on the symptoms and the size of the hernia, the doctor determines whether surgical intervention is necessary or if conservative treatment is sufficient.

Treatment Options:

1.Conservative Treatment:

  • Medications: Antacids, acid-reducing drugs, and prokinetics to improve digestion
  • Diet: Avoid large meals, fatty and spicy foods that can worsen symptoms
  • Lifestyle changes: Avoid activities that increase abdominal pressure, and do not lie down immediately after meals

2.Surgical Treatment:

If conservative methods are ineffective or symptoms are severe, surgery may be recommended:

  • Fundoplication: The top part of the stomach is wrapped around the esophagus to prevent acid reflux
  • Hiatal opening repair: Surgical correction of the diaphragm opening to eliminate the hernia

Postoperative Period:

Recovery time varies from several weeks to months depending on the type of surgery.

Patients must follow dietary and physical activity recommendations.

Surgery can significantly relieve symptoms but may require long-term monitoring to prevent recurrence.

Recovery:

After fundoplication, patients typically stay in the hospital for several days, then continue rehabilitation at home.

It is important to adhere to dietary guidelines and avoid heavy physical exertion during the first months post-surgery.

The Helyos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center offers modern methods for treating hiatal hernias that help patients return to their normal lifestyles with minimal complications.
