Ventral Hernia at the Helyos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center

A ventral hernia, treated at the Helyos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center, is a protrusion of abdominal organs (most often the intestines) through weakened or damaged areas of the abdominal wall. These hernias can develop following surgeries, injuries, or due to congenital abnormalities. Ventral hernias commonly appear near surgical scars or naturally weak spots in the abdominal wall.

When to See a Doctor:

  • Abdominal wall bulge: If you notice a new or growing bulge in the abdominal area, especially if it's painful during physical activity or coughing.
  • Pain or discomfort: If the bulge is accompanied by pain, discomfort, or a feeling of heaviness, especially after exertion.
  • Strangulated hernia: Sudden sharp pain and inability to push the hernia back in may indicate a medical emergency.
  • Digestive issues: Constipation, bloating, or nausea could signal bowel involvement due to the hernia.

Consultation Process:

1.Initial examination: The doctor will palpate the abdominal wall to detect hernias and take a detailed medical history, including past surgeries and family cases of ventral hernias.

2.Diagnostic tests may include:

  • Abdominal ultrasound to detect the hernia sac and involved organs.
  • CT scan for more accurate assessment of hernia size and tissue involvement.
  • MRI for detailed evaluation.
  • Lab tests to assess overall health and possible inflammation.

3.Assessment for Surgery: Surgical treatment may be recommended depending on hernia size, pain level, and risk of complications. If the hernia is not causing issues, monitoring may be advised.

Treatment Options:

1.Conservative management: Supportive belts or binders may be used, though they are not permanent solutions and don’t replace surgery.

2.Surgical treatment — Hernioplasty: Recommended when the hernia causes pain or threatens health.

  • Laparoscopic hernioplasty: A minimally invasive method using small incisions, special tools, and a camera to repair and reinforce the abdominal wall—leading to quicker recovery.
  • Open surgery: Used for larger hernias or when more extensive repair is needed.

Postoperative Period:

  • Laparoscopy: Patients can usually be discharged the next day or within a few days.
  • Open surgery: Hospital stay typically lasts 5–7 days.

Recovery:

  • After laparoscopy: Patients often return to normal activities quickly and can be discharged within 1–3 days.
  • After open surgery: Recovery takes longer, and physical activity should be limited for several weeks.

Follow-Up: A follow-up examination is needed a few weeks post-surgery to assess the outcome and determine if further evaluations are required.

The Helyos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center offers high-quality care for ventral hernias using modern surgical and minimally invasive techniques. If you have questions or wish to schedule a consultation, please contact our center.
