Thyroid Resection at the Helуos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center

Thyroid resection is a surgical procedure in which part or all of the thyroid gland is removed. This surgery is performed for benign or malignant tumors, nodular goiter, hyperthyroidism, and other conditions that do not respond to medical treatment.

When is Surgery Necessary?

Indications for thyroid resection:

Nodular or multinodular goiter, causing a cosmetic defect or compressing neck structures
Hyperthyroidism that does not respond to medications
Suspicion or presence of malignant thyroid tumors
Enlarged thyroid gland, leading to difficulty breathing or swallowing
Recurrence of thyroid nodules after conservative treatment

Types of Surgeries Performed

Lobectomy (hemithyroidectomy) – removal of one thyroid lobe
Subtotal resection – partial removal of the thyroid gland with preservation of functional tissue
Thyroidectomy – complete removal of the gland in cases of malignancy or severe hyperthyroidism
Lymph node dissection – removal of affected lymph nodes along with the thyroid gland (for oncological cases)

How is the Surgery Performed?

Diagnosis – blood tests for hormones, ultrasound, biopsy (if necessary), CT or MRI scans.
Preparation – consultation with an endocrinologist, cardiologist, and anesthesiologist.
Surgery – performed under general anesthesia, lasting 40 minutes to 2 hours, depending on complexity.
Rehabilitation – the patient remains under medical supervision for 1-3 days in the hospital.
Follow-up examination – post-surgical hormone monitoring and treatment adjustment if needed.
