Main Spinal Cord Developmental Defects:
- Spina Bifida (Myelomeningocele): This condition occurs when the spinal cord and its coverings protrude through a defect in the vertebrae. It is one of the most serious forms of spinal cord developmental defects.
- Arnold-Chiari Malformation: This developmental anomaly involves the downward displacement of part of the brain (the cerebellum) through the large opening at the base of the skull into the spinal cord canal, potentially causing various neurological symptoms.
- Teratomas or Other Spinal Cord Tumors: These are abnormalities where tumors or growths form in or around the spinal cord, potentially putting pressure on the nerve structures and leading to functional impairments.
- Spinal Anomalies: Developmental disorders of the spine, such as instability of the vertebral column, deformations, or disruptions in the connection between the vertebrae, can compress the spinal cord.
When to See a Doctor:
- Neurological Symptoms: Back pain, weakness, or numbness in the limbs, sensory disturbances.
- Movement Issues: Difficulty walking, coordination problems.
- Congenital Anomalies: If a child or adult has visible signs of a developmental defect, such as noticeable defects in the spine or spinal cord area.
- Organ Function Changes: Problems with pelvic organ function (urination, defecation) or cardiovascular system disorders.
