Surgical Treatment of Abscess at the "Helyos" Surgery and Rehabilitation Center

Is an effective method for dealing with tissue purulence, used when conservative treatment methods (antibiotics, physiotherapy, other medications) fail, or when the abscess threatens complications.

What is an Abscess?

An abscess is a localized collection of pus within tissues, typically caused by a bacterial infection, trauma, or other factors. It commonly forms in subcutaneous tissues, muscles, organs, or cavities, such as the lungs, liver, teeth, or bladder.

Signs and Symptoms of an Abscess:

An abscess may present various symptoms depending on its location and size, but the most common signs include:

  • Localized pain in the area of the abscess, often increasing when pressed.
  • Inflammation and redness of the skin or mucous membranes around the abscess.
  • Swelling or puffiness at the site of purulence.
  • Fever due to a general inflammatory process in the body.
  • Pus discharge from the abscess cavity if it ruptures.
  • General malaise, weakness, headache, chills.

Depending on the location of the abscess, other symptoms may include:

  • Lung abscess: cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, hemoptysis.
  • Liver abscess: pain in the right upper abdomen, nausea, jaundice.
  • Tooth abscess: oral pain, gum swelling, fever.
  • Urinary system abscess: pain during urination, changes in urine (blood or pus).

When to See a Doctor?

You should see a doctor if you notice one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Sudden onset of pain in the skin or organs, which does not subside and worsens over time.
  • Appearance of swelling or a hard lump under the skin, accompanied by pain.
  • Fever or signs of general body intoxication (weakness, nausea, chills).
  • Worsening of a pre-existing abscess (if pus is draining from the wound but symptoms worsen, or new symptoms appear).
  • Inability to reduce fever despite an ongoing inflammation.
  • Abscess after trauma or infectious disease.

How Does Surgical Treatment of an Abscess Proceed?

1.Preparation for Surgery:

  • The procedure may involve either laparoscopy or traditional surgical intervention, depending on the abscess's location. All surgeries are performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the procedure and the abscess’s location.
  • Preparation includes ensuring antiseptic treatment of the surgery site and administering anesthesia.

2.Abscess Drainage:

  • During the surgical treatment, an incision is made over the abscess to drain the pus and ensure proper outflow of the contents.
  • The surgeon drains the wound by placing special drains to allow pus to flow out during the postoperative period.
  • The entire pus is evacuated, which reduces the risk of reinfection.

3.Completion of Surgery:

  • After drainage, the wound is treated with antiseptics and sutured if necessary (for larger incisions).
  • If needed, a temporary drain is installed to allow the body to continue draining the pus.

4.Postoperative Period:

  • After surgery, the patient is monitored by doctors for their general condition and the healing process.
  • An antibiotic course is prescribed to prevent reinfection.
  • Pain-relief and anti-inflammatory medications are administered to ease postoperative pain.

5.Drain Removal and Follow-up:

  • Once the abscess heals and no more pus accumulates, the drain is removed.
  • The patient undergoes follow-up appointments to assess the healing process and receive any necessary rehabilitation advice.

When to See a Doctor?

You should consult a doctor if you notice:

  • Pain, swelling, or redness in the skin area that doesn’t go away or improve on its own.
  • Elevated temperature or other signs of infection (weakness, nausea, chills).

How is the consultation going?

Initial Examination:
  • The surgeon gathers the patient's medical history: when the symptoms started, whether there was trauma, and if there are any comorbidities.
  • The location, size, and pain characteristics of the abscess are determined.
Physical Examination:
  • The surgeon performs an examination and palpation of the abscess area to assess its size, consistency, presence of fluctuation (softness in the center, indicating pus), and other characteristics.
  • The patient’s general condition is evaluated: temperature, pulse, blood pressure.
Diagnostic Studies:
  • To accurately determine the presence and nature of the abscess, the doctor may recommend:
  • Ultrasound (US) to determine the exact location and size of the abscess.
  • CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) for deeper abscesses, offering a more detailed evaluation of the tissues.
  • Laboratory tests: general blood test, infection tests (pus culture), biochemical studies to assess the patient’s overall condition.
Assessment of the Need for Surgical Intervention:
  • The doctor decides whether surgical treatment is necessary or if conservative therapy (e.g., antibiotics) will suffice. In cases of a large abscess or risk of complications, a surgical intervention will be recommended.
