What is Tracheal and Esophageal Compression?

Tracheal and esophageal compression is a condition in which pathological formations or changes in the neck and chest organs cause breathing and swallowing difficulties. It may be caused by an enlarged thyroid gland, tumors, vascular aneurysms, or other pathologies.

Symptoms that may indicate compression:

Difficulty breathing, especially during physical exertion
Persistent cough or hoarseness
Sensation of a foreign body in the throat

Diagnosis of the Condition

At the Helуos Center, we conduct comprehensive diagnostics to accurately assess the condition of the trachea and esophagus:

Consultation with specialists (otolaryngologist, endocrinologist, thoracic surgeon)
Laryngoscopy or bronchoscopy to examine the trachea
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) to evaluate the esophagus
Ultrasound of the thyroid gland and neck organs
CT or MRI for detailed visualization of pathological formations

Surgical Treatment Methods at Helуos

The choice of surgical intervention depends on the cause of compression:

Thyroidectomy – removal of part or all of the thyroid gland in cases of significant enlargement.
Resection of neck or chest tumors – for benign or malignant neoplasms.
Reconstructive tracheal surgery – to restore airway patency.
