Modified Lateral Radical Neck Dissection at the Helуos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center

Modified lateral radical neck dissection is a complex surgical procedure aimed at removing lymph nodes from one or both sides of the neck. This surgery is used in the treatment of malignant diseases, such as thyroid cancer, throat cancer, laryngeal cancer, and oral cavity cancers, as well as other oncological conditions that spread to lymph nodes.

When is Neck Dissection Necessary?

The procedure is usually performed in the following cases:

  • Lymph node metastasis (from malignancies such as thyroid cancer, throat cancer, oral cavity cancer, etc.)
  • Spread of cancer to the lymph nodes after insufficient chemotherapy or radiation therapy
  • Suspicion of malignant lymph node involvement
  • Impaired function of neck organs due to enlarged lymph nodes

How is Modified Lateral Radical Neck Dissection Performed?

Diagnosis: Prior to surgery, the patient undergoes a series of tests, including ultrasound, CT, MRI of the neck, lymph node biopsy, and general blood tests.

Preparation: Consultation with a surgeon, anesthesiologist, and endocrinologist. Evaluation of the patient's overall health.

Surgery:

  • The procedure is done under general anesthesia.
  • Lymph nodes from the affected side of the neck (one or both sides, depending on the extent of involvement) are removed.
  • During the surgery, the surgeon may also remove tissue that contains cancer cells to prevent further spread of the cancer.
  • The operation lasts from 2 to 4 hours depending on complexity.

Rehabilitation: After surgery, the patient stays in the hospital under medical supervision for 2-4 days. A rehabilitation course may be prescribed, including physiotherapy, medications, and monitoring the lymphatic system's condition.
