When should you consult an ENT surgeon?

A general practitioner or family doctor will typically refer you to an ENT surgeon if multiple courses of conservative treatment have failed. However, for a number of symptoms, you should consult a specialist immediately. These include:

• Frequent exacerbations of tonsillitis or sinusitis;
• Prolonged, unresolved impairment of nasal breathing;
• Persistent hearing loss or a sensation of fullness in the ear;
• Detected polyps, cysts, or other tumors of the ENT organs;
• Severe snoring accompanied by episodes of sleep apnea (breathing cessation).

Pathological changes in the throat and neck area may not always stem from ENT diseases alone. During the diagnosis, the physician conducts a differential workup to rule out thyroid diseases and other localized neck lesions. If necessary, patients are referred for a consultation with a pediatric endocrinologist.

Key surgical interventions

Surgical treatment of ENT pathologies can be performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis, depending on the scope of the procedure. Helyos performs ear, nose, and throat operations of varying levels of complexity:

• Myringotomy (paracentesis) — for acute or exudative otitis media to drain fluid;
• Tympanostomy tube insertion (grommet placement) — for recurrent exudative otitis media;
• Eardrum repair (tympanoplasty) — for perforations;
• Reduction of nasal turbinates (conchotomy / turbinoplasty) — for turbinate hypertrophy;
• Endoscopic laryngeal surgeries — for benign growths and laryngeal stenosis.

The majority of surgical procedures are performed endoscopically — through natural anatomical pathways without skin incisions. This significantly shortens recovery times and reduces post-operative discomfort.
