How does pediatric ultrasound work at the "Helios" Surgery and Rehabilitation Center?

Ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive, and safe procedure conducted using a special ultrasound device. During the procedure, the doctor uses sound waves to create images of the child’s internal organs and tissues.

The process is as follows:

1. Preparation for the procedure: The child lies on an examination table or sits (depending on the area being examined).
2. Gel application: The doctor applies a special gel to the area being examined, which improves the conduction of sound waves.
3. Examination: The specialist moves the ultrasound probe across the skin, displaying images on the screen. During the procedure, the doctor may adjust the probe position to get clearer images.
4. Results analysis: After the procedure, the doctor will discuss the results and provide recommendations if needed.

Preparation for pediatric ultrasound:

1. Abdominal organs and kidney ultrasound: For the best results, it is recommended to conduct the examination on an empty stomach. Therefore, the child should not eat for at least 4-6 hours before the procedure. If the examination is for a baby who is still breastfeeding, do not feed the child for 2-3 hours before the examination. It is also advisable to avoid consuming gas-producing foods 1-2 days before the examination.
2. Echocardiography (heart ultrasound): No special preparation is needed. The examination can be done both after eating or on an empty stomach.
3. Joint, lymph node, and soft tissue ultrasound: No special preparation is required. However, it is recommended to remove any jewelry or clothing that may obstruct access to the examined area.
4. Scrotum ultrasound: Preparation is minimal, but it is recommended to avoid physical exertion just before the procedure.

General recommendations for all ultrasounds:

• Since it is important to ensure comfort for young children during the procedure, we recommend bringing your child’s favorite toy or book to help them relax.
• During the examination, the child should remain calm and still. If the child is very young, parental assistance may be needed to keep them calm.
