Lumpectomy of the breast is a surgical procedure that involves the partial removal of the breast. During this operation, only the tumor or part of it is removed, while the rest of the breast is preserved. This method is commonly used for treating early-stage breast cancer when the tumor is localized and has no signs of spreading. How is the Surgery Performed?

1.Pre-surgical preparation:

General blood tests and a consultation with an anesthesiologist are conducted to determine the optimal anesthesia.

2.Surgical procedure:

Lumpectomy is usually performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on individual indications and the complexity of the surgery.
The surgeon makes a small incision on the breast where the tumor is located.
The tumor or part of it, along with a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue, is removed to minimize the risk of recurrence.
In some cases, intraoperative testing is performed to confirm the complete removal of tumor cells.
The wound is closed with cosmetic stitches to minimize visible scarring.

3.Post-operative recovery:

After surgery, the patient may stay in the hospital for 1–2 days for observation.
Regular dressings and monitoring of the wound healing process are carried out.
Antibiotics are prescribed to prevent infections.
Recovery from lumpectomy typically takes several weeks. During this time, the patient may be recommended physiotherapy to speed up recovery.
