Lumpectomy of the Breast at the Helуos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center

Lumpectomy of the breast is a surgical procedure that involves the partial removal of the breast. During this operation, only the tumor or part of it is removed, while the rest of the breast is preserved. This method is commonly used for treating early-stage breast cancer when the tumor is localized and has no signs of spreading. Lumpectomy is less invasive compared to radical surgeries such as mastectomy and allows for the preservation of the natural appearance of the breast.

Indications for Lumpectomy of the Breast:

  • Breast cancer at early stages, when the tumor is confined and can be removed without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Benign tumors (such as fibroadenomas), where removing part of the breast is sufficient for treatment.
  • Tumors with well-defined boundaries that do not spread to other parts of the breast.
  • The need to preserve the aesthetic appearance of the breast, minimizing cosmetic defects.

How is the Surgery Performed?

1.Pre-surgical preparation:

  • The patient undergoes a comprehensive examination, including mammography or ultrasound to determine the size and location of the tumor.
  • A biopsy may be performed to clarify the nature of the tumor.
  • General blood tests and a consultation with an anesthesiologist are conducted to determine the optimal anesthesia.

2.Surgical procedure:

  • Lumpectomy is usually performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on individual indications and the complexity of the surgery.
  • The surgeon makes a small incision on the breast where the tumor is located.
  • The tumor or part of it, along with a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue, is removed to minimize the risk of recurrence.
  • In some cases, intraoperative testing is performed to confirm the complete removal of tumor cells.
  • The wound is closed with cosmetic stitches to minimize visible scarring.

3.Post-operative recovery:

  • After surgery, the patient may stay in the hospital for 1–2 days for observation.
  • Regular dressings and monitoring of the wound healing process are carried out.
  • Antibiotics are prescribed to prevent infections.
  • Recovery from lumpectomy typically takes several weeks. During this time, the patient may be recommended physiotherapy to speed up recovery.
