A lobectomy is a surgical procedure in which one lobe (left or right) of the thyroid gland is removed. It is an effective treatment for benign and malignant tumors as well as nodular changes affecting gland function.

When is Lobectomy Necessary?

Surgery is performed in the following cases:

  • Nodular or multinodular goiter, causing discomfort or a cosmetic defect
  • Follicular tumor (benign or suspicious for malignancy)
  • Suspected thyroid cancer, localized in one lobe
  • Cystic formations, with a tendency to grow
  • Hyperthyroidism, if only one lobe is affected
  • Enlarged thyroid lobe, compressing the trachea or esophagus

How is Lobectomy Performed?

  • Diagnosis – blood tests for hormones, ultrasound, biopsy (if necessary), CT or MRI scans.
  • Preparation – consultation with an endocrinologist, cardiologist, and anesthesiologist.
  • Surgery – performed under general anesthesia, lasting 40 minutes to 1.5 hours.
  • Rehabilitation – the patient stays under medical supervision for 1-3 days in the hospital.
  • Follow-up examination – post-surgical hormone monitoring and hormone replacement therapy if needed.
