Core Needle Biopsy of the Breast in Dnipro

A core needle biopsy is a diagnostic procedure in which a special needle is used to take a tissue sample from a specific organ. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia to minimize patient discomfort. It is used to diagnose various conditions, including cancer, infections, and other pathologies. Core needle biopsy allows for the collection of a larger tissue sample compared to other biopsy methods, which increases the accuracy of diagnosis. After the procedure, the tissue sample is examined under a microscope to identify any pathological changes.

Indications for Core Needle Biopsy

The need for a core needle biopsy is determined by a breast specialist (mammologist) after a thorough examination. This diagnostic procedure is necessary in the following cases:

  • The presence of suspicious formations or lumps in the breast detected during a clinical exam, mammography, or ultrasound;
  • Suspected breast cancer or other malignant tumors;
  • Evaluation and differentiation between benign and malignant breast lesions;
  • Monitoring changes in the breast in patients with diagnosed cancer to assess treatment effectiveness or detect recurrence;
  • Inability to determine an accurate diagnosis using other methods;
  • Determining the level of cell atypia in breast tissue.

There are no absolute contraindications for core needle biopsy, as this method is often critical for establishing an accurate diagnosis and choosing a treatment strategy.

Stages of Core Needle Breast Biopsy

The procedure consists of the following steps:

  • Patient preparation: The doctor explains the procedure, possible risks, and complications. The patient lies down on the examination table, and the biopsy area is cleaned with an antiseptic;
  • Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to minimize discomfort. During the procedure, the patient may feel slight pressure in the breast area;
  • Imaging guidance: Using ultrasound or mammography, the doctor locates the precise area for the needle insertion to ensure optimal sampling;
  • Tissue sampling: A specialized core needle is inserted into the breast through a small skin incision. The needle reaches the suspicious area and collects the tissue sample;
  • Completion: Once the sample is taken, the needle is removed, the area is cleaned, and a sterile bandage is applied. The doctor provides instructions for post-procedure care and schedules the next visit.

The entire procedure typically lasts 10–20 minutes, depending on factors such as the complexity of accessing the target area, the need for imaging support, and the patient’s individual characteristics.

Results of Core Needle Biopsy

The results are usually available within 3–7 days, and in urgent cases, even sooner. The tissue samples are analyzed by a pathologist under a microscope to detect any abnormal or malignant cells. After receiving the results, the following steps should be taken:

  • Doctor consultation: The patient should consult a physician at the Helyos Clinic, who will explain the pathology report, discuss the next steps, and answer any questions;
  • Treatment planning: Based on the results, the doctor may recommend further tests, observation, surgery, or other treatment options. If the result is positive for cancer, an oncologist consultation may be necessary;
  • Psychological support: In case of a positive result for cancer or another serious condition, it is important to receive psychological support from specialists or loved ones to help the patient cope emotionally.

A core needle biopsy can be used to diagnose breast cancer, determine its type and stage, and identify benign conditions such as fibroadenomas or cystic formations. It can also detect infections and inflammatory breast diseases such as mastitis.
