What is adenotomy?
Adenoids are a collection of lymphoid tissue in the nasopharynx. In early childhood they perform a protective function. With frequent inflammation or congenital hypertrophy, the adenoids enlarge and begin to block the nasopharynx, disrupting breathing. Adenotomy is an operation to remove lymphoid tissue through the oral cavity, without skin incisions.

Why do enlarged adenoids affect health?
Adenoids are most active in children aged 3 to 7 — it is at this age that they most often require treatment. Because of chronic nasal congestion, the child constantly breathes through the mouth, sleep becomes restless, and snoring appears. Concentration deteriorates, school performance drops, and recurrent otitis and sinusitis become a regular problem.
When is adenoid removal required?

How is the adenotomy operation performed?
During the operation, the surgeon carefully removes the adenoid tissue through the oral cavity under endoscopic guidance. In some cases a laser or radiofrequency energy may be used for this purpose.
The operation takes 20–30 minutes and is performed under general anesthesia. Most patients go home on the day of the surgical intervention or the following day. A normal diet can be resumed within 1–2 days, and full recovery takes 1–2 weeks.

Recovery after adenoid removal
Rehabilitation after adenotomy proceeds fairly quickly. Just a few hours after the operation the child can drink, and by the next day can eat soft food. Pain is usually minimal.
Important! For the first 7–10 days after adenotomy, physical activity should be limited, and overheating and crowded places should be avoided. Swimming in pools or open water is prohibited until complete healing.
