Subtotal Hemithyroidectomy at the Helуos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center

Subtotal hemithyroidectomy is a surgical procedure in which one lobe of the thyroid gland (half of the organ) is removed. This method is used for various thyroid diseases, such as benign tumors, nodular formations, and in cases of suspected cancer, when it is necessary to preserve the gland's function.

When is Subtotal Hemithyroidectomy Necessary?

The procedure may be required in the following cases:

  • Benign tumors (nodules, cystic formations) that do not respond to medication
  • Thyroid dysfunction requiring partial removal of the gland
  • Thyrotoxicosis, when one lobe of the thyroid gland is malfunctioning
  • Suspicion of thyroid cancer in one of the lobes of the gland
  • Multinodular goiter causing discomfort and functional impairments

How is the Surgery Performed?

Diagnosis: Before surgery, the patient undergoes thorough examinations such as ultrasound, biopsy, CT, or MRI to determine the size and nature of the formations.

Preparation: The patient consults with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and other specialists if necessary. Blood tests and an overall health evaluation are performed before the surgery.

Surgery:

  • The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
  • The surgeon removes one lobe of the thyroid gland while trying to preserve its function.
  • If necessary, the surgery may be supplemented by the removal of lymph nodes if cancer is suspected.
  • The surgery usually lasts from 1 to 2 hours, depending on its complexity.

Rehabilitation: After surgery, the patient is monitored in the hospital for 1-3 days. Discharge depends on the patient's condition, and typically, recovery is rapid.

Follow-up Monitoring: After the surgery, the patient needs to undergo regular check-ups to monitor hormonal levels and thyroid function.
