Indications for Fibroadenoma Removal:

  1. Size of the tumor: If the fibroadenoma grows and becomes large, it can cause discomfort or visually change the shape of the breast.
  2. Pain or discomfort: If the tumor causes pain or discomfort when pressed or during physical activity.
  3. Changes in the tumor's characteristics: If changes in the size or consistency of the fibroadenoma are detected during examination.
  4. Psychological discomfort: Many patients choose to remove the fibroadenoma due to psychological discomfort related to the presence of the tumor.
  5. Need to exclude cancer: If there is any suspicion regarding the benign nature of the tumor, removal may be recommended to clarify the diagnosis.

How is the Surgery Performed?

1.Pre-surgical Preparation:

  • Before surgery, the patient undergoes a series of examinations, such as breast ultrasound or mammography, to more accurately determine the size and location of the tumor. A biopsy may also be performed to confirm its benign nature. Blood tests and a consultation with an anesthesiologist are usually required to determine the best type of anesthesia.

2.Surgical Preparation:

  • Surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the size and location of the fibroadenoma.
  • Pre-surgery, the patient may be given sedatives and advice on food intake and medication.

3.Surgery:

  • The surgery to remove the fibroadenoma is minimally invasive and usually performed through a small incision on the skin of the breast.
  • The surgeon removes the tumor along with surrounding tissues to minimize the risk of recurrence.
  • The procedure typically lasts between 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on complexity.

4.Postoperative Recovery:

  • After surgery, the patient stays in the hospital for 1-2 days, depending on the anesthesia used and the overall condition.
  • Post-surgery, the patient may be prescribed pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • It is important to follow the doctor's instructions on wound care and avoid physical exertion.
  • After the removal, a histological examination is performed to confirm the benign nature of the tumor.
