Neurosonography at the Helyos Center for Family Health and Rehabilitation
Neurosonography is performed through the fontanelle (soft spot on the baby’s head), which is why it’s only possible for children under one year old. After this point, the fontanelle closes and the skull bones block the ultrasound waves required for the examination.
This is a painless procedure. A small probe is gently placed on the baby’s head, and no special preparation is needed. If the baby is very active, the scan may be done while the child is naturally asleep — no medications are required. The examination typically takes about 10 minutes.
Important! Every child should undergo neurosonography at 3 months of age!
