Sectoral Resection of the Breast at the Helуos Surgery and Rehabilitation Center

Sectoral resection of the breast is a surgical operation that involves the removal of part of the breast (sector) for the treatment or diagnosis of various breast conditions, such as cancer, fibroadenomas, or other benign tumors. This surgery is usually performed when the tumor is confined to a specific area of the breast and there are no signs of spread to other parts.

Indications for Sectoral Resection of the Breast:

  • Diagnosis or suspicion of breast cancer. Sectoral resection allows for the removal of the tumor for further histological analysis while preserving most of the breast tissue.
  • Benign tumors (fibroadenomas), when the tumor is well-defined and can be removed without damaging the entire breast.
  • Changes in the breast tissue that require partial tissue removal for further treatment or prevention.
  • The need to maintain the appearance of the breast, minimizing cosmetic defects.

How is the Surgery Performed?

1.Pre-surgical preparation:

  • The patient undergoes various tests, such as ultrasound or mammography, to determine the size and location of the tumor.
  • In some cases, a biopsy may be performed to confirm the nature of the tumor.
  • A general blood test and a consultation with an anesthesiologist to determine the type of anesthesia are carried out.

2.Surgical procedure:

  • Sectoral resection is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the individual indications and the complexity of the surgery.
  • The surgeon makes an incision on the skin of the breast where the tumor is located.
  • Part of the breast tissue, along with the tumor and potentially suspicious surrounding tissue, is removed to minimize the risk of recurrence.
  • The wound is closed with cosmetic stitches to minimize scarring and ensure a good aesthetic result.

3.Post-operative recovery:

  • After the surgery, the patient may remain in the hospital for a few hours or days, depending on their condition and the type of anesthesia.
  • Follow-up dressings and monitoring of the healing process are carried out.
  • Antibiotics are prescribed to prevent infection.
  • If necessary, physiotherapy treatments may be recommended for recovery.
  • After healing, the patient will be referred for continued monitoring to ensure the health of the breast.
