What is refractive lens exchange?
The lens is the eye’s natural optical element, which helps focus the image on the retina. Its properties change with age: the ability to focus at close range decreases, and over time the lens may become cloudy.
During refractive lens exchange the natural lens is removed and an intraocular lens with individually calculated optical parameters is implanted in its place.
Who might the operation be recommended for?
Refractive lens exchange may be considered for:
- age-related decline in near vision
- long-sightedness
- short-sightedness
- astigmatism
- cases where laser correction is not possible or not appropriate
The final decision is made by the ophthalmologist based on the examination.
Which intraocular lenses are used?
The type of lens is selected individually and depends on the condition of the eye, the patient’s visual needs and the doctor’s recommendations.
The ophthalmologist explains the available options during the consultation.
How is the procedure performed?
The operation is carried out under local anaesthesia. The natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens.
Afterwards the doctor assesses the condition of the eye and gives recommendations for the recovery period.
Preparation
A full ophthalmological assessment is carried out before the operation. The doctor measures the parameters of the eye needed to select the lens and identifies any contraindications.
Recovery after the operation
Recovery time varies from patient to patient. The doctor gives recommendations on activity, eye care and restrictions during the first period after surgery.
Follow-up examinations at the intervals set by the ophthalmologist are essential.
Why choose Helios?
At Helios the diagnostics, the operation and the post-operative follow-up all take place in one medical center. The treatment plan is set by the ophthalmologist individually after an examination.
Need a consultation with an ophthalmologist?
Book an appointment at Helios. The doctor will examine you, order further diagnostics if needed and determine the best treatment approach.
